Ohio Medical Waste Guidelines

One of the aspects of healthcare that is less considered when we think about hospitals, clinics and research facilities, is the medical waste component that has a considerable impact on healthcare worker safety and environmental output. In Cleveland, Cincinnati, Dayton and across the state, Daniels Health has been serving Ohio-based customers since 2004 - driving dramatic reductions in needlestick injuries through our world-leading Sharpsmart sharps disposal container, and rethinking how medical waste is managed through solutions such as our clinically designed Medismart container, our waste segregation programs, and our dedication to ongoing training and education around medical waste, trace chemotherapy and pharmaceutical waste management

The Ohio Environmental Property Agency (EPA) is responsible for the regulation of medical and biohazardous waste in Ohio, and the agency outlines different disposal requirements based on the amount of waste produced each calendar month. Under these regulations, healthcare facilities are divided into 2 categories: small quantity generators (SQG), which generate less than 50 lbs of waste per month, and large quantity generators (LQG), which generate more than 50 lbs. As a full service provider with clean processing and treatment sites across the country, Daniels Health are able to service all Ohio healthcare facilities.

Waste Classification

“Infectious wastes” means any wastes or combination of wastes that include cultures and stocks of infectious agents and associated biologicals, human blood and blood products, and substances that were or are likely to have been exposed to or contaminated with or are likely to transmit an infectious agent or zoonotic agent.

Storage Requirements

Ohio state requirements mandate:

The integrity of the packaging must be maintained. There are no time limits regarding infectious waste storage, however, infectious waste must remain in a non-putrescent state. You must also maintain infectious waste in a manner that prevents it from becoming a food source or breeding ground for animals or insects. Infectious waste storage areas must be marked with a sign that states “warning: infectious waste” and/or displays the international biohazard symbol, or lock the storage area.
